(Posted Jun 11, 2012) – Essentia Health- Duluth (MN) is looking for a physician-scientist to fill a new position in the trauma surgery department. The individual would have the possibility of a part-time clinical, part-time research appointment. Essentia Health has a research department, the Essentia Institute of Rural Health (EIRH), which would provide offices and support with the collegiality of other researchers, support staff, biostatisticians, and research informatics. EIRH has access to both an enterprise-wide data warehouse and a virtual data warehouse that offer very large, structured clinical and administrative databases for population research. The individual would have the option of seeking up to a 40% research appointment, with that time protected from patient care duties. The individual would be expected to help in the research requirements involved with becoming a level I trauma center, and would be the section research coordinator. Within the trauma department the surgeon would be expected to be board certified or eligible in general surgery, and board certified or eligible in critical care with fellowship training. The practice involves approximately a third each of acute care surgery, trauma surgery and critical care. The position features a competitive base salary with bonus for production. PRACTICE SPECIFICS · ACS-COT Level II Adult Trauma Center & Level II Pediatric Trauma Center · Annual trauma admissions approximately 1450 patients · St. Mary’s Medical Center: 330-bed tertiary care center; Top 100 Hospital · 11-bed SICU; 8-bed PICU; 10-bed Neurotrauma ICU, also coronary and medical ICUs · Essentia Health - Duluth: Burn ICU and stepdown · Solid referral base of 20 regional emergency departments with a committed emergency response system · Trauma program staff includes: 5 Trauma Surgeons, Manager (CNS), Office Coordinator, 2 Trauma Registrars, 2 Physician Assistants, 1 Clinical Nurse Specialist, and 1 injury prevention coordinator Ideal Candidate should have interest in: · Acute Care Surgery · Trauma Surgery · Critical Care · Research: health service research, epidemiology or translational · Work with and teach Residents/Advanced Practice Clinicians (Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practictioners) · Teaching - Outreach education, ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), and FCCS (Fundamentals of Critical Care Support) courses. REQUIREMENTS · BC/BE in General Surgery · Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care required · Formal training in clinical research design and methodology DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES MPH or doctoral degree (PhD, others) in a relevant research field Record of scholarly work, successful research grant funding and publications The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program and to collaborate within and outside EIRH/Essentia Health. The researcher will incrementally establish and maintain external funding for his/her research within a 3 to 5 year period.
