(Posted Jun 11, 2012) – Essentia Health- Duluth (MN) is looking for a physician-scientist to fill a new position in the trauma surgery department. The individual would have the possibility of a part-time clinical, part-time research appointment. Essentia Health has a research department, the Essentia Institute of Rural Health (EIRH), which would provide offices and support with the collegiality of other researchers, support staff, biostatisticians, and research informatics. EIRH has access to both an enterprise-wide data warehouse and a virtual data warehouse that offer very large, structured clinical and administrative databases for population research. The individual would have the option of seeking up to a 40% research appointment, with that time protected from patient care duties. The individual would be expected to help in the research requirements involved with becoming a level I trauma center, and would be the section research coordinator. Within the trauma department the surgeon would be expected to be board certified or eligible in general surgery, and board certified or eligible in critical care with fellowship training. The practice involves approximately a third each of acute care surgery, trauma surgery and critical care. The position features a competitive base salary with bonus for production. (Posted Jun 18, 2012) – UMass Memorial Medical Center, the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has an excellent opportunity for a full time faculty position in Trauma-General Surgery-Surgical Critical Care. UMass Memorial is a Level 1 Trauma Center (Adult and Pediatric) with approximately 262,929 emergency visits, 3000 trauma activations and 2,500 Surgical ICU admissions per year into the 3 surgical ICUs comprising a total of 33 beds. In addition to an Acute General Surgery practice and Trauma day/night coverage, the group manages, as Surgical Intensivists, the vascular, transplant, general surgery, oncology, burns, neurological surgery patients and other high acuity sub-specialty patients in the three SICUs. We have a large cohort of mid-level providers (NP’s, PA’s) who provide 75% of the bedside ICU care. Industry and NIH-funded trauma-critical care research is an important component of the Division’s activities. A new Trauma-ED Center, ten new ORs and 16 new SICU beds opened February 2006. The hospital administration is highly supportive of the Trauma Center and has creative strategies for the development of Critical Care for the UMass Memorial Healthcare System, including a new and expanding eICU function.

The well established trauma center at SHB is a Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) certified Level II regional adult trauma center with a volume of 1600 – 1800 patients per year. The Division of Acute Care Surgery at SHB covers the trauma service, the state of the art surgical ICU and emergency surgical services, with in-house availability of providers around the clock. The Burn Unit admits nearly 500 patients a year and in a newly renovated facility is a Comprehensive Burn Center where patients are cared for from outpatient to ICU to Step-down by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists and other ancillary staff. It is the only burn center in Georgia backed by a Level I Trauma Center, admitting over 3,000 patients a year. Responsibilities will include providing coverage for the Trauma Service and the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, research, resident/student education, and participation in community prevention programs. (Posted Aug 3, 2012) – The University of Missouri, Division of Acute Care Surgery is seeking a qualified Burn Surgeon to serve as Medical Director of the George David Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center. The Burn and Wound center is the largest dedicated burn center in Missouri, and is associated with The Frank L. Mitchell, Jr., M.D. Trauma Center at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics, the only ACS-verified Level I trauma center in Central Missouri, with ACGME approved residencies in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. The Center, specifically designed for optimal burn care, is a dedicated 14 bed, state-of-the-art ICU complete with spacious dialysis ready rooms, on-site treatment room and therapy room, and sophisticated environmental controls amongst other clinical necessities. The Center provides in-patient care to approximately 200 acute burn injuries annually, one third of which are pediatric patients, while providing out-patient services to more than 400 burn related injuries a year in its clinic. Successful candidates will be Board Certified/Board Eligible in general surgery, with added qualifications in Burn Surgical Critical Care, or have demonstrated experience in the care of the acutely ill and injured and burn care. Building a collaborative burn and wound care service line for MU Healthcare is the vision for this position in conjunction with plastic and trauma surgery.

The successful applicant will also participate in the development of an Acute Care Surgery Service and will rotate through the Surgical Intensive Care Units and participate in the Emergency General Surgery call schedule. Located in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, Hartford Hospital is the primary teaching hospital for University of Connecticut residents and successful applicants will be appointed to the University of Connecticut faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level commensurate with their qualifications and experience. Hartford Hospital is a 748 bed Level 1 academic/tertiary care medical center with 1,930 trauma admissions in 2011 and an average of 100,000 ED visits per year. Hartford Hospital has a 16 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, an 18 bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and an 18 bed Neurological Intensive Care Unit. Candidates should have completed General Surgery Resident Training and have, or be eligible for, a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgical Critical Care. Additional training in an Acute Care Surgery fellowship is desirable, but not required. A research background is also desirable but not mandatory.
