(Posted May 14, 2015) – Winthrop-University Hospital is a 591-bed leading non-profit health system in the region, dedicated to quality care, community service, education and research. Currently, it is expanding its acute care surgical program as it pursues ACS Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center designation/verification. The Institution plans to hire several acute care surgeons to join three full time acute care surgeons. The Hospital employs 6,600 individuals, including nearly 1,500 nurses and 1,525 full-time and voluntary attending medical staff. It serves as the clinical educational site for 3rd and 4th year students of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine and is a Major Affiliate of the General Surgery and Orthopedic Residency Programs. The hospital recently opened a free standing four story, 95,000 square feet building with core laboratories, simulated instructional area and other facilities for clinical and basic investigation. Winthrop academic residencies include internal medicine, pathology, radiology, pediatrics, dentistry and ob-gyn. A 3000 square foot newly constructed Trauma Admitting Area adjacent to the Emergency Room will open in the early fall. The Division of Acute Care Surgery in the Department of Surgery seeks several outstanding fellowship-trained Trauma/Critical Care/Acute Care Surgeons. Responsibilities include trauma, surgical critical care, acute care surgical coverage and clinical research. Opportunities for elective general surgery also exist. Robust clinical and basic science research opportunities are also available and strongly encouraged. Must possess outstanding clinical skills, a strong interest in clinical education, and must qualify for a faculty appointment at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. QUALIFICATIONS: • Board Certified/Eligible in General Surgery • Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery Fellowship trained • ATLS Certification/Instructor preferred • NY State medical licensure (or ability to obtain) • 2-3 years’ exp preferred (Outstanding candidates with less exp may also apply.)

This physician leader will have overall responsibility for the clinical, educational, scholarly and administrative activities of the department that provides care for the critically ill patient population. The Department of Critical Care is responsible for providing care for patients with critical illness related to medical, neurologic, neurosurgical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, obstetrical, pediatric, and other diagnoses. The department provides primary and consultative care within five adult ICUs at Maine Medical Center, in intermediate care units, and throughout the hospital. Maine Medical Center is a 637-bed tertiary care academic health center and a strategic partner of the Tufts University School of Medicine. We are the only ACS Level-1 Trauma Center in the state of Maine and are a JCAHO-verified Primary Stroke Center. MMC also houses the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, the state’s only dedicated pediatric hospital.
