(Posted Jun 27, 2016) – The Department of Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, is seeking a Chief for the Division of Acute Care Surgery. The Division of Acute Care Surgery is organized into the Sections of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute/Emergency General Surgery. There are 16 surgeons and 17 ACPs in the Division.
Qualified candidates should:
• Be a recognized academic clinician-researcher and qualify for the rank of Associate or Professor of Surgery.
• Provide a vision and strategic direction for the Division of Acute Care Surgery as well as leadership, supervision and accountability to fulfill the education, research, clinical and administrative service missions and values of the Department.
• Possess strong leadership abilities, management experience in multidisciplinary/multi-professional environments, and the ability to influence, negotiate and motivate collaborators to build a culture of quality, efficiency, and responsiveness.
• Be energy driven professionally with the ability to foster the growth of others through a progressive mind-set and aptitude to motivate others by way of inspirational and directive communication and good listening skills to provide the Division with a strong level of trust and guidance.
• Have a strong commitment to the education of fellows, residents, medical students and advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs).
The Department of Surgery has 68 full-time clinical faculty and 6 PhD translational and basic science researchers. The Divisions in the Department of Surgery are Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Gastrointestinal/Minimally Invasive Surgery (GI/MIS), Hepatopancreatic and Biliary (HPB) Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Urology. The general surgery residency matches 6 categorical residents per year and 2 preliminary residents for the PGY-1 year. Fellowship programs are offered in Bariatric Surgery, Breast Oncology, GI/MIS, HPB Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Urologic Oncology.
The Division of Acute Care Surgery manages the most seriously ill and injured surgical patients in the Carolinas HealthCare System and its surrounding geography within North and South Carolina. The Carolinas HealthCare System is one of the largest, most comprehensive and integrated, public, not-for-profit systems in the nation compromising more than 7,500 licensed beds, employing nearly 62,000 people and accounting for more than 12 million patient encounters on an annual basis. Trauma and Surgical Critical Care services are performed at Carolinas Medical Center and Acute/Emergency General Surgery services at Carolinas Medical Center and Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy. The Carolinas Medical Center is an 874 bed, tertiary/quaternary care hospital, ACS-verified Level I trauma center in the Carolinas HealthCare System. It serves as the University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Charlotte Campus and the lead institution for the regional Metrolina Trauma Advisory Committee (MTAC). Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy is a 196 bed acute care hospital located 1.5 miles from Carolinas Medical Center campus with advanced specialty services in orthopaedics, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, and urogynecology.
The F. H. "Sammy" Ross Trauma Center at Carolinas Medical Center is the busiest in the state of North Carolina, with more than 5,100 trauma code activations and 4,700 adult trauma admissions annually. It is the 6th highest trauma volume hospital in the United States. Pediatric trauma care at the Levine Children's Hospital is an integral part of the trauma program. The 234-bed Levine’s Children’s Hospital, located on the campus of the Carolinas Medical Center, is an ACS-verified Level II pediatric trauma center. Carolinas Medical Center features a 29-bed dedicated Surgical/Trauma ICU, a separate 29-bed Neurosurgical ICU and virtual critical care services for the Carolinas HealthCare System. Surgical Critical Care provides consultation and management services for multiple surgical subspecialties evaluating over 2500 patients annually. The Division has one ACGME-approved Surgical Critical Care fellowship. Acute and Emergency General Surgery service are provided for inpatients and emergency room patients at Carolinas Medical Center and Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy. Freestanding emergency rooms in the Carolinas HealthCare System provide additional surgical volume to both locations. The Physician Connection Line (PCL) through Carolinas HealthCare System’s TeleHealth Solutions® coordinates patient transfers, primarily to Carolinas Medical Center, for urgent or emergent surgical evaluation and treatment.
