Successful candidates should possess an MD or MD/PhD, excellent leadership skills, clinical expertise and a successful background in quality, performance improvement and program development. The Associate Medical Director will have dual reporting responsibilities to the the Massachusetts General Hospital Division Chief of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. An average of two (2) twelve-hour acute care surgery or surgical intensive care unit (ICU) call coverage shifts per month and participation in MGH educational and peer review activities will be expected to enhance surgical services at the Central Maine Medical Center. Established in 1891, Central Maine Medical Center is a 250-bed tertiary care center and the premiere hospital for Central Maine Healthcare. CMMC operates the busiest Emergency Department in Central Maine, annually serving approximately 50,000 patients. Nearly 8,000 elective surgeries are performed a year with an additional 800 trauma surgery admissions. Established in 1811, Massachusetts General Hospital is a 1,000-bed facility in Boston, MA and is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and lead a highly accomplished Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. The successful candidate will also be appointed to hold the endowed Wesley J. Howe Professor of Trauma Surgery and be the Director of the New Jersey Trauma Center at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Mosenthal, Ben Rush Endowed Professor and Chair. The department’s training programs include general surgery, plastics surgery, urology surgery residencies, as well as vascular and surgical critical care fellowships. Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery: The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery includes nine faculty members who are responsible for covering Trauma Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Acute Care Surgery. The Division provides surgical services for the benefit of our patients and professional colleagues twenty-four hours each day, seven days a week. Our state designated Level 1 Trauma Center has been continually verified by the American College of Surgeons since 1991. While the major academic focus is trauma and critical care, we also provide all emergency surgical coverage to the emergency department at University Hospital. All division faculty have their general surgery boards with added qualifications in critical care from the American Board of Surgery. In addition, the Division includes a physiatrist who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well a Brain Injury Medicine. Research activities focus heavily on measuring patient outcomes after injury, cost-effective medical care, palliative care, surgical infections, critical care and surgical education. The robust educational program includes daily morning report conference, weekly trauma-case conferences, and various outreach conferences to hospitals and public forums. There is an active and vibrant trauma outreach and prevention program staffed by an experienced coordinator. Trauma Surgery: Components of the trauma surgery program include the Trauma Admitting Area, OR, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, inpatient units as well as the outpatient clinic. The trauma program is recognized as an integral and nationally known health care delivery service of University Hospital. The Division Chief is a member of the hospital’s joint Operative Committee and has a reporting structure to the highest level of hospital administration. This multidisciplinary program crosses many specialty lines dedicated to the care of the injured within the hospital's community. We remain the only Level 1 Trauma Center for northern New Jersey and one of the three Level I centers in the state. Our trauma service is staffed 24/7 by faculty members of the Division and the Division Chief will assume the role of Trauma Medical Director. The service is also supported by six advanced practice providers. The trauma service responds to over 3,000 trauma activations per year and over 2,000 hospital admissions with approximately 25% penetrating trauma. The patient population served is ethnically and demographically diverse. There is in-house attending coverage at all times. This plan ensures that any injured patient requiring immediate surgical treatment will have access to the highest level of professional care we can offer. Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU): The Division provides service coverage in The University Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The SICU is a closed unit that provides critical care trauma, general surgery and surgical subspecialists at UH including the liver transplant team. High level care is delivered in a multidisciplinary fashion maintaining a close working relationship with Critical Care Pharmacy as well as other ancillary services. There is in-house resident and faculty coverage of the SICU at all times. The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is a one year ACGME accredited fellowship that has been in existence since 1984. The fellows also have a large role in the trauma program and, in addition to the SICU and Trauma Service, offers a number of rotations such as burns (at St. Barnabas, an ABA approved burn center in Livingston, NJ), and includes one month of research. A new exchange rotation with the ACGME approved critical care Fellowship at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is planned for the 2017 academic year. The Surgical Critical Care Fellow is required to have completed an ACGME accredited program in general surgery. The SICU is a 14-bed unit that admits all surgical cases. The SICU service is responsible for the patient’s care while in the SICU. There are approximately 650 SICU patients admitted annually. The SICU is currently directed by the SICU Medical Director, Dr. Leslie Tyrie who is also the fellowship director. Acute Care Surgery (ACS): Emergency general surgery coverage, including emergency department and in-hospital consultations, is provided 24/7 by the members of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. The ACS service is further supported by advanced practice providers and residents. Quality improvement and standardization of care is a priority for this service.
