With an abundance of critical blunt and penetrating injured adults and children, a plentiful and diverse operative and resuscitative trauma experience awaits. The trauma service admits approximately 3000 adult and pediatric trauma patients to the trauma service annually, and the trauma team is responsible for the care of patients in several newly renovated areas including our own discrete 3400 square foot Trauma Admitting/Resuscitation Area and 16 bed Trauma ICU, as well as our 2 bay helipad resuscitation area, Trauma step down unit, and Trauma floor. In addition to trauma coverage, we provide 24/7 ED coverage for emergency general surgery and 24/7 ICU coverage for the Surgical Critical Care Service. We maintain an ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care fellowship, freestanding Surgery and Emergency Medicine residencies, and have a medical student class of 50/year from the new Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. Our trauma “teams” include Surgical Critical Care fellows, Surgical and Emergency Medicine residents, nurse practitioners, and numerous outside rotating Surgery and Emergency Medicine residents. Philadelphia and numerous beautiful suburbs with top-tier schools are a few minutes away. Academic appointments are through Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. This position reports to the Chairman of Surgery and is responsible for the development of a high quality academically focused division providing services at both Level II trauma centers at academically affiliated Cabell Huntington Hospital(303 staffed beds with 60K ED visits/yr.) and St. Mary’s Medical Center(393 beds seeing 72K ED visits/yr). Accordingly, the Chief will develop and oversee surgical teams for treatment of trauma, critical care and acute care surgery patients, organize research initiatives, seek and acquire grants, and encourage publications and presentations in prestigious venues nationally. The Chief will implement and oversee related programs in teaching, research and service. This individual will provide leadership in direct patient care and quality improvement initiatives, while collaborating with the basic sciences and other clinical services to develop related research and educational programs. The successful candidate for this position will have: • A strong background in academic surgery and Board Certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. • A successful track record in surgical leadership, particularly in organizing and building programs. • A talent for developing and supporting academic surgery programs. • A demonstrable skill in both attracting and cultivating new talent to assure that the division reaches its full potential. • Ability to work collaboratively with division chiefs, department chairs, hospital administration, and lay boards.
