Together they are searching for a Director of the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Program at Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) in Lewiston, ME, with a joint appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital and an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. Reporting to the Chief of Mass General’s Division of TESSCC, the successful candidate will be responsible for clinical care, administrative services and teaching at CMH, as they relate to Acute Care Surgery. The candidate will also have additional responsibilities to be provided at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The academic appointment will be at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor and commensurate with experience and credentials. Applicants must be a fellowship-trained Acute Care/Trauma Surgeon with board-certification in General Surgery and added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care and strong surgical leadership skills. The MGH is a 1,000-bed facility in Boston, MA and an ACS-verified Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Level I Certified Burn Center. Central Maine Healthcare has three accredited Trauma Centers in Maine with their premiere hospital located in Lewiston, ME. This hospital operates the busiest Emergency Department in central Maine, annually serving approximately 50,000 patients and 800 trauma patients.

Forbes is located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, 20 minutes east of downtown Pittsburgh. Forbes Hospital started its now accredited, Level II Trauma Program on January 1, 2013 and has been the leading care provider in Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs for over 30 years. Over that time, they have grown their services to meet their patients’ and community’s needs. As a 350-bed facility with 15,000 inpatient admissions, 12,000 surgeries, and nearly 50,000 emergency department visits annually, Forbes provides an advanced level of care to our patients. Position Overview Two trauma/critical care surgeons staff the day shift M-F, 7 AM-7 PM. During holidays, weekends and night shifts there is one surgeon in house with a second surgeon at home on backup call. All surgeons are currently required to cover at least five in house night shifts per month as well as cover an equal share of night back-up call. The trauma surgeons provide critical care for trauma and surgical patients in the new 20-bed Intensive Care Unit. The Trauma Service support staff includes 6 advanced practice providers. One is present 24/7 and two during Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday daytime. Forbes is a teaching hospital and has residents present at all times, including general surgery residents. There is at least one surgery resident in house 24/7. The residents respond to highest-level trauma activations unless they are in the operating room. The qualified candidate should be board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Board-eligible graduates of critical care fellowships with excellent interpersonal communication skills, experience delivering healthcare via collaborative teamwork and a professional goal to practice in one location for at least five years will also be considered. The ability to obtain and maintain a Pennsylvania Medical License and privileges with AHN are required. The fellowship provides the opportunity to work at our Level I Trauma Center that serves the greater central Ohio region as well as our new Level III Trauma Center. The curriculum focuses on a broad spectrum of acute surgical disease with particular emphasis on complex surgical emergencies, surgical rescue, and multidisciplinary surgical care. Elective rotations are available in burn surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and interventional radiology. In addition, opportunities to engage in a variety of research are available and range from surgical innovations to health outcomes research and clinical trials. Our 1,382-bed Level I Trauma Center resides on the main academic campus and sees approximately 2,800 trauma patients annually. The trauma service operates in tandem with the emergency general surgery service forming two distinct acute care surgery services that typically carry a combined census of 60 patients. Our program strengths stem from our large volume of high acuity surgical cases as well as our commitment to excellence in clinical teaching. The acute care surgery service is led by 10 full-time faculty surgeons who maintain regional and national standings in academic surgery and critical care. The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Burn concentrates efforts in clinical care, research, and education related to patients with acute care problems. The division delivers high-quality care to patients suffering from surgical critical illness, trauma, emergency general surgery diseases, and burns. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on the main campus is established as a Level I Trauma Center seeing approximately 2,800 trauma patients annually. The University of South Alabama is a Level I Trauma Center with over 2,000 trauma admissions per year. The Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) has 16 beds and admits over 700 patients per year. The STICU is staffed by the division’s trauma surgeons. The division has an ACGME approved surgical critical care fellowship. Candidates should have a keen interest in academic surgery in the areas of patient care, medical education, and trauma and critical care-related clinical and translational research. Dedicated time for basic science and translational research is available through collaboration with the University of South Alabama’s Center for Lung Biology. Applicants should be fellowship trained in surgical critical care. Clinical responsibilities include development of clinical practice guidelines, process improvement, trauma call, and patient care.
